Dora Matthews House in Coleford

Situated in Coleford, Dora Matthews House is a brand new Housing and Care Development; it is an innovative joint project between the Homes and Communities Agency, Forest of Dean District Council, Gloucestershire County Council, Rooftop Housing Group and Heritage Care. Named after a popular local figure, who for many years worked for the Dr Charley’s Lunch Club and contributed a lot to the local Coleford community, Dora Matthews House provides 44 self-contained one and two bedroom apartments for those who are 55 years upwards as well as five, two bedroom dormer bungalows for people with Learning Disabilities. Dora Matthews House was completed in spring 2015.

Good design is of paramount importance for any new development. Dora Matthews House not only looks attractive but also meets the other key criteria for a development of this kind of easy accessibility, spaciousness and energy efficiency. Arranged across three levels, it has lift and wheelchair access throughout. All apartments are well proportioned and designed to be energy efficient.  With a fitted kitchen, an en-suite bathroom to the main bedroom and an open plan lounge-diner, the apartments are modern, well designed, attractive and spacious. The airy corridors and communal areas throughout the building are being decorated by specialist interior designers who are skilled in creating both functional and relaxing spaces.

A vital part of the development is the wellbeing centre which is situated at the front of the development. This acts as a focal point for residents as it is where they can always go to socialise. It is home to a café, activities centre and laundry. The centre is for the use of all residents but the also forms a hub for the local community where specialist advice and a range of activities are available.

Heritage Care provides an emergency 24 hour call system plus a care team to provide personalised, fully assessed support and care packages. Residents can also raise any queries they may have at the site office or, outside office hours, can call the 24 hour emergency helpline on 07889 068642. The development also has telecare facilities to enable people to live safely in their own homes and for those who seek extra care and support to be monitored. Dora Matthews House caters for couples where at least one of the couple requires care, either from their partner, or a care provider. This allows couples to carry on living together, a vital aspect to extending and improving people’s lives in their later years.

Dora Matthews House is a superb example of high quality housing with care which provides choice, independence and dignity for all residents.
