James can now look to the future

James is a young man with problems. He has a behaviour and developmental disorder due to using cannabinoids and aerosols plus he has mild Asperger’s. When Heritage Care became involved with his case he was living at home with his parents but his relationship with them was breaking down. There was conflict between him and his parents because of his inability to manage his finances and a lack of trust due to his previous substance abuse. He was assessed as being too vulnerable to return to this toxic family environment as it would lead to him becoming emotionally unstable and could cause him to self harm or overdose on his medication.

Heritage Care undertook joint needs and risk assessments with James’ care team to agree roles and ensure that all areas of risk were covered and all areas of need were met. They also raised staffing levels significantly for the first two weeks to deal with the risk of James self harming.

A variety of different techniques were used to help James move on with his life. Mindfulness approaches were used to help James manage his distressing thoughts. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy was also used to improve his state of mind. His care team also worked on James’ relationship with his family which significantly improved his well being. Financial education also formed part of the recovery process and James learned basic budgeting skills and gained an understanding of financial accountability. The mental health recovery star has also formed an important part of the process as it has been used to show James the progress that he had made and enable him to envisage an independent future.

James’ life has changed in many ways. He has not self harmed or relapsed with substance abuse. His medication has been reduced and he is able to manage taking it independently. He is coping with managing his own finances which is a major leap forward. Vital to his recovery have been the improvements to his confidence and self-esteem. These have enabled him to bid on his own flat, to take on a regular job and to start a college course. James now has a future.
